Polarization rotator is a good alternative to retardation waveplate when it comes to rotation of polarization at certain angle. Polarization rotation is caused by property, called Optical activity, which is natural to quartz crystal and other substances that are enantiomorphous. This property is caused by crystal lattice structure, that lacks mirror symmetry due to helicoidal chains of SiO4 units oriented along c-axis in quartz structure. Depending on chain rotation direction, there is "right" and "left" quartz which rotates polarization clockwise or counter-clockwise respectively. Polarization rotators are c-cut so rotation of polarization occurs independently of component's rotation around optical axis, thus component is alignment-insensitive and the only requirement is that incident beam must be perpendicular to rotator's aperture. For convenient use all rotators are mounted in black anodized aluminum mount. Device is good replacement for waveplate, for usage along with narrow band lasers.
